Office Colonoscopy versus Hospital Colonoscopy

What is the difference between an in office colonoscopy and a colonoscopy in a hospital setting?

At St. Louis Colon Rectal Health Center, there is no difference in the colonoscopy procedure in office or in a hospital setting. We use the same equipment, sedation and anesthesia. The only difference is the cost savings to our patients in having an office colonoscopy.

The same colonoscopy preparation is required whether the procedure is done in the office or hospital.

The in office colonoscopy, like in the hospital, is an out-patient procedure that takes, typically, less than an hour to perform. The patient is required to have someone drive them home after having the procedure.

As with any procedure, it’s important to have a consultation with your doctor regarding the condition of your health. At St. Louis Colon  Rectal Health Center we discuss and evaluate the needs of each patient to determine the proper test, options and care to be provided.

How safe is an office colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy, whether performed in an office setting or hospital setting is a very safe procedure. Complications occur in less than 1% of patients. The risks in this small percentage include bleeding, a tear in the intestine, anesthesia risks and failure to detect a polyp.

A well trained endoscopist or colonoscopist, is key to a good colonoscopy. At St. Louis Colon Rectal Health Center we’ve performed thousands of colonoscopies.  We discuss and evaluate the needs of each patient to determine the proper test, options and care to be provided.

As with any procedure, it’s important to have a consultation with your doctor regarding the condition of your health.
